About us

AbleWeb Radio is York’s online radio station created by and for people with learning difficulties, and disabilities.

We are a group of adults with moderate learning difficulties and physical disabilities who create and record their own radio shows.

AbleWeb Radio is an online platform to:

  • Share stories and information relevant to people with disabilities, as well as the wider community

  • Showcase and celebrate work

  • Be inclusive…

  • …and enjoyable to listen to, of course!

We are a project by Accessible Arts and Media, run in partnership with Khaoz Media, City of York Council Inclusive Arts and the Explore Media Centre. We are funded by The Big Lottery Arts For All and City of York Council.

The idea for the radio station has grown out of AbleWeb York, an information website that has also been designed and run by members of Accessible Arts and Media with learning difficulties, and disabilities. The site is full of useful information in an accessible format about positive activities and services available to local disabled people.

Users of the AbleWeb site highlighted that there are still a significant number of people with disabilities in York who find it difficult to use a website without support, suggesting that an online radio station would be more accessible for people with a wider range of needs.
